Outcomex, formerly Uplinx Group, implemented Cisco Identity Services Engine (ISE) at The Sydney Children’s Hospital Network enabling clinicians to prescribe medication at the bedside using laptops and other smart devices. The hospital needed to upgrade its existing wireless architecture allowing users to safely access the network with external devices and enabling electronic medication management across the hospital. In result to the implementation of Cisco ISE,  nurses can view medication charts from a mobile device, greatly increasing efficiency and security, as well as improving communication and legibility of medication orders, significantly reducing human error.

Client

The Sydney Children’s Hospital Network (SCHN) is the largest network of hospitals and services for children in Australia. Made up of The Children’s Hospital at Westmead and Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick, as well as a number of specialised health services, SCHN manages 51,000 inpatient admissions, 92,000 Emergency Department presentations and more than 1,000,000 outpatient service visits every year.

Opportunity

NSW Health chose the SCHN as a pilot site to trial Electronic Medication Management (EMM), a state-wide initiative enabling clinicians to prescribe medication at the bedside using laptops and other smart devices. The aim was to improve the quality, safety and effectiveness of medication management and reduce errors in prescribing or administering medication. The hospital needed to upgrade its existing wireless architecture allowing users to safely access the network with external devices and enabling electronic medication management across the hospital.

Solution

SCHN partnered with Outcomex, to implement an Identity Services Engine (ISE) solution in order to connect approved users to the network. ISE allowed the hospital to gain visibility into every user and device accessing its network. As a result of this solution, the SCHN was able to enjoy two big benefits; a secure network for peace of mind and a smooth transition to the new system. Outcomex played a significant role in the project and helped the hospital to save significant time and money on implementation.

Impact

The Children’s Hospital at Westmead has been able to implement EMM across the hospital, moving away from its old paper-based process. As an impact of this solution, SCHN implemented electronic medication management across the hospital, improved efficiency and secure processes for staff, and opened up new electronic solutions for patients.
